New TV series in the Alien universe. Of course I’m in immediately. I have to say it lived up to my own hype. We have the classic Alien technology where you can have human robots that live forever, but keyboards and computer screens that come from the 80s. Or one moment a character can talk to an AI computer only to start typing commands into it via a keyboard two sentences later.
Not to mention the sound design, which is terribly cozy. The soundtrack also surprised me. There is a sequence in episode two, after a climax, where a fairly long song with a nice electric guitar solo plays. When I heard it, I had to look up the song immediately, and was pleasantly surprised that it was a song from the soundtrack and not a licensed pre-existing song.
There is perhaps a bit too much fan service at times, a bit too many close-ups of the Alien “just because you can.” It is also cool in a way that they seem to have made an animatronic Alien, but it looks a bit “stiff” in some scenes, especially when the camera stays on it for a longer time.
The new creatures were a stroke of genius, though, and you found yourself longing for the next episode just to see what would happen with them.
The story was also perfectly fine, but I’m a bit worried about the next season and wonder where they can take the series without it leaning more towards drama instead of creepy action. Speaking of action, the series isn’t as scary as previous films, but rather more straightforward action. That didn’t bother me, but I can imagine many might be disappointed on that point.
